A more formal welcome post is coming soon, but we wanted to share the results of our recent logo survey. Thanks to all of you that participated! Harvesting the imagination of the crowd will be a core part of our business, so we thought getting the crowd’s input on our logo designs would be a good first step. Below are the two logo options that were presented in the survey.
Logo Design A:
Logo Design B:
Prior to the survey, we were leaning toward option A. The crowd overwhelmingly preferred option B. We decided we’d better listen to the crowd. Our survey collected responses from 94 participants, with the following distribution of results.
We also collected open-ended written feedback about the logo. A number of people noted that option B looked like a giant mouth, which our designer addressed by adding more detail to the arm. One comment especially caught our attention: “Otter isn’t ‘giant’ enough, needs to be holding a cruise ship in one paw.” We thought this was a brilliant suggestion, and a great example of crowdsourced imagination, and we actually asked our designer to give this a shot. We loved the result, but feared it might be going over the deep end. Here’s how that experiment turned out:
After the survey, we asked our designer for one more variation, for the sake of comparison — an otter with a fish in his mouth. Maybe he was losing patience with us by this point, because the next logo delivered… was not quite up to the same level of quality:
Ultimately, the final version of our logo looks like this. Soon to be seen on T-shirts and coffee mugs world wide. If you would like it as a tattoo, that can be arranged.
